5 common SEO mistakes that are hurting your website

5 common SEO mistakes that are hurting your website

You built a beautiful website for your business. You are proud of it. But there is one big problem: no one can find it. When you search for your services on Google, your site is nowhere to be seen.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Many business websites are held back by a handful of common, but easily fixable, SEO mistakes.

The good news is that you do not need to be an expert to fix them. Let us walk through the five most common issues we see and exactly what you can do about them.

1. You are ignoring Google my business

The mistake: Thinking your website alone is enough for local customers.

Why it hurts you: If you serve customers in a specific area, like Johannesburg or Cape Town, and you do not have a verified and optimized Google my business profile, you are invisible on Google maps and in local “near me” searches. This is the single biggest mistake for local businesses.

The fix: Claim and verify your free Google my business listing. Fill out every section completely with your accurate address, phone number, business hours, and photos.

2. Your website is slow

The mistake: Assuming that how your website looks is more important than how fast it loads.

Why it hurts you: A slow website creates a bad experience for visitors, who will often leave immediately. Google also explicitly uses page speed as a ranking factor. In South Africa, where internet connections can be inconsistent, a fast site is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

The fix: Compress your images before uploading them. Use a caching plugin if you are on WordPress. Consider talking to your developer about a performance audit.

3. You are not creating helpful content

The mistake: Having a website with only five pages that barely explain what you do.

Why it hurts you: Google’s main goal is to answer users’ questions. If your website has very little content, Google has no way of knowing what you do or who you help. It cannot confidently recommend you for any search queries.

The fix: Think about what your customers would search for. Then, create pages or blog posts that provide clear answers. For example, a lawyer could write a post called “What to include in a standard employment contract.”

4. You forgot about mobile users

The mistake: Designing your website only for a desktop computer screen.

Why it hurts you: Most web traffic now comes from phones. If your site is difficult to read or navigate on a mobile device, visitors will leave quickly. Google also uses “mobile-friendliness” as a key ranking signal.

The fix: Check your website on your phone. Is the text easy to read? Are the buttons easy to tap? If not, you likely need a responsive redesign.

5. You are not using clear page titles

The mistake: Having vague page titles like “Home” or “Services.”

Why it hurts you: The title of your page is one of the most important signals for Google. It tells the search engine what the page is about. A title like “Services” is useless, but a title like “WordPress Website Development Services in Johannesburg” is perfect.

The fix: Go through your key pages and make sure each one has a unique, descriptive title tag that includes what you do and where you do it.

Your quick SEO audit checklist

If your website is not on Google, run through this list:

  • [ ] I have claimed and completed my Google my business profile.
  • [ ] My website loads in under 3 seconds on a mobile connection.
  • [ ] My website is easy to use on a phone.
  • [ ] I have clear, descriptive page titles.
  • [ ] I have more than just a homepage and contact page.

Fixing these five issues can have a dramatic impact on your visibility. SEO is not magic, it is about following the rules of good practice. By avoiding these common mistakes, you give your website a fighting chance to rank and attract the customers you deserve.

If you have fixed these issues and are still struggling, our team can conduct a professional SEO audit to find the deeper problems holding your website back.
